With a deep love for all American Roots music Country Rockers Back Porch Mary shake up Austin Texas in a big way. Originally from Kansas lead singer-guitarist known only as Mike led his band to Texas where some of the original members started to drop like flies and returned home. Not one to back down from a challenge Mike was determined to find the “real Back Porch Mary” and auditioned 67 bass players and 44 drummers. His diligence paid off and he found Craig Bagby who Mike says “is a really good drummer and can sing back-up vocals really well.” Mike also found a very young Troy Wilson who played bass and Mike says was just waiting for the rest of the band to show up so he could be in Back Porch Mary. After constant rehearsals Mike felt that the band needed another guitar player, enter Mike’s friend Slim Laurence. Slim slipped right in comfortably, having been around the band constantly. The group has done well returning triumphantly from Germany’s PopKomm festival.
Back Porch Mary is definitely your harder edge country. Driving guitars, strong percussion give their music a southern roots rock flavor. One of the two songs featured here is “700 Miles Ago” which is a great rolling guitar song. Discussing this track Mike elaborates, “The song was written about the town I came from before I moved to Austin, Texas. It was recorded at Willie Nelson's studio called Pedernales Studios in Spicewood, Texas. Stuart Sullivan was the Producer. It was recorded in about three takes. The song took about fifteen minutes to write.” “Believe In Nothing” is a gangly guitar tune, good harmony; lazy melodic vocals carry this song. Both tracks show a spirited country rock style with easygoing vocals and well timed harmonies and great musicianship.
Willow’s Picks: 700 Miles Ago, Believe In Nothing.
